    Thomas Knight Steanes (ca. 1858-1926) was born in Cherk, Shropshire, worked in Shanghai 1879-1882, left for Brisbane and then arrived in Sydney in 1884, where he exhibited products at the first trade exhibition in Sydney and Melbourne. He built the house Sibbertoft in Ourimbah Road, Mosman. In 1891, he married Alice Victoria Walker.

    His brother Thomas Hewitt Steanes, had a photographic studio on the Corso, Manly, ca. 1918-1926, with brother Geoffrey Ellington. The half plate negatives are by him. (John Walker was a third brother.)
