  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    R. H. (Reginald Henry) Jerrold-Nathan (1889-1979), portrait painter, was born in England. A Royal Academy medallist, he received acclaim early in his career for a range of commissions including King George VI and the Shah of Persia. He came to Australia in 1924 and settled in Sydney. A distinguished exponent of conventional portraiture, he was critical of William Dobell's winning entry of Joshua Smith in the 1943 Archibald Prize; he claimed it was a caricature and outside the terms of the competition. He was President of the Australian Art Society from 1945 to 1952. Jerrold-Nathan's prolific output reflected a gallery of Australian public figures such as the cricketer G. C. Macartney, Aboriginal actor Robert Tudawali, feminists Linda Littlejohn and Jessie Street, author Ethel Turner, businesspeople Florence Taylor and Sir Ernest Fisk, and politicians Sir Daniel Levy and Sir William Cullen.
