  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Hunters Hill Recreation Company Ltd was established in 1900 for the purpose of providing a social and general recreation club for local residents. Within 18 months, the company had purchased land in Madeline Street, built tennis courts, a bowling green, croquet lawns and a club house and transferred management to the Hunters Hill Recreation Club, which had a membership of 117 in March 1902. In 1923 the Tennis Club moved to new premises in Woolwich Road, while the Croquet Club folded in 1929. The Bowling Club flourished, changing its name to the Hunters Hill Bowling and Recreation Club in 1904 and taking over the assets of the original Hunters Hill Recreation Company on its liquidation in 1941. In 1971 the club became the Hunters Hill Bowling Club Ltd, and in 1988 this changed again to the Hunters Hill Club Ltd. Increasing costs and declining revenue brought about changes in the 1980s and 1990s, including staff reductions, the admission of women members, the sale of some land and the re-establishment of tennis facilities. With the introduction of junior and family membership, numbers increased to over 800 in 1992.
