    Peter M. Gunnar is a retired lawyer, judge, politician and businessman. He was born in London, England in 1924, the son of Dr. Herman P. Gunnar and his wife Jocelyn (nee McMillan), and was raised in the United States of America. Gunnar practised law for 38 years and was the first judge of the Oregon Tax Court. He was involved in Republican politics and headed a public company which owned and operated hotels. Gunnar retired in 1988 and has published various books, including a biography of his grandfather, Good Iron Mac: the life of Australian federation father Sir William McMillan, K.C.M.G.(1995).
    William McMillan was born in Londonderry, Ireland in 1850, son of Gibson McMillan and his wife Eliza, nee McArthur. At 17 he went into the London office of his uncle's merchant business, W. & A. McArthur Ltd., and in 1869 was sent to Sydney to join partner firm A.H.C. Macafee. In 1877 McMillan married firstly Ada Charlotte Graham, by whom he had four children, William McArthur b.1879, Florence Elizabeth b.1882, Gibson b.1883, and Constance Elaine b.1885. In 1888 McMillan was granted a judicial separation from his wife, and a divorce in 1891.
    In 1892 McMillan married secondly, Helen Maria O'Reilly by whom he had two children, Marian Jocelyn b.1894 and Helen Rosamund b.1896. Helen O'Reilly was born in 1863, daughter of Rev. William and Helen Wilhemina Gibson. In 1885 she married Dr. Archibald O'Reilly who died in 1891.
    Marian Jocelyn McMillan (known as Jocelyn), daughter of William and Helen McMillan, married Herman P. Gunnar in 1921 and thereafter lived in the United States of America. Family papers, diaries and albums collected by Jocelyn were used as source material by her son, Peter M. Gunnar, in his biography of McMillan.
