    1287 photographic prints (24 boxes) - albumen, black and white
  • Scope and Content
    Photographs of Pacific Islands and Islanders including New Guinea, New Britain, Fiji, Solomons, Tonga and Samoa. Photographs consist largely of posed individual portraits or groups of Islanders in traditional dress, some holding weapons and decorated implements, or in Western attire. Gatherings of Island and Western people in traditional or Western attire at church services and other ceremonies. Other photographs depict local natural features such as beaches, forests, waterfalls and bodies of water. Man-made features, in traditional Islander or in 19th Century Western style include plantations, houses, wharves, streetscapes and other structures. Traditional and Western watercraft such as canoes, sailing vessels and steam ships are also depicted, as are monuments, art and wood carvings.
