  • General note

Dated by date of issue of mezzotint "The Guardian Frigate, commanded by Lieutenant Riou...", of which this watercolour is either the original or a copy.
Dighton has been suggested as the artist of this watercolour because it matches precisely a mezzotint engraving of the same image which has been said to be after Dighton (a copy of the mezzotint is also at ML 1112)
It is not clear whether this watercolour is the original for, or a copy of, the mezzotint "The Guardian Frigate commanded by Lieutenant Riou, surrounded by islands of ice.."which was published in London by Carrington Bowles on 22 September 1790. The two images are virtually identical. Both are located at ML 1112.
Both the watercolour and the mezzotint are numbered "599"
Originally collected by the Carrington Bowles family, from an album of drawings bound by them, ca. 1830. Sold by a descendant in Sotheby's rooms, 30/4/1953. Auctioned at Sotheby's, London, Thursday 10/3/88.
