H.M.S. Pearl was commanded by J.G. Goodenough, Commodore of the Australian station. Goodenough had been asked to investigate the annexation of, or grant of Protectorate status to, Fiji, and he arrived there in 1873. He was fatally wounded in 1875 on the Santa Cruz Islands [now the Solomon Islands]. The author of the log Lieutenant Henry Goldfinch gives a first hand account of this and another account written up from his log. - Scope and ContentLog of H.M.S.
