  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Kit Denton, writer, was born in England in 1928, and migrated to Australia in 1950. Denton was employed by the Australian Broadcasting Commission from 1951 to 1965 as a writer, presenter, and director of radio programmes and documentaries. After leaving the A.B.C. Denton worked as a freelance writer, producer, and director of radio and television documentaries, commercial films and television programmes. Denton wrote columns in The Australian newspaper under the pseudonyms 'Janus' and 'Martin Collins' between 1964 and 1968, and 'A Walk Around My Cluttered Mind' under his own name in 1966 and 1967. Denton also wrote freelance for The Bulletin and The Sydney Morning Herald. During the early 1970s and 1980s Denton was a film assessor for the Australian Film Development Corporation.
Denton published four novels, The Breaker (1973), The Thinkable Man (1976), Fiddler's Bridge (1986) and Red on White (1991), as well as a collection of short stories, Burning Spear (1990), and a collection of sketches and reminiscences, A Walk Around My Cluttered Mind (1968), based on his newspaper column. Denton also published four volumes of history, Gallipoli Illustrated (1981), Closed File (1983), and two of the Australians at War series, Gallipoli: One Long Grave (1986) and For Queen and Commonwealth (1987). Closed File is a factual account of the Breaker Morant case, based on official records and newspaper reports and follows the novel The Breaker, which was the basis of the successful film Breaker Morant (1980).
Kit Denton died at Wentworth Falls in the Blue Mountains, N.S.W., in 1997.
