Simeon Lord was born in 1771 in Dobroyd, Yorkshire. In 1790 he was convicted of theft and sentenced to transportation for seven years. He arrived in Sydney in 1791. After early emancipation he began a remarkable mercantile career, pioneering commerce in Australia. During the next twenty years he was a shipowner, retailer, auctioneer, sealer, pastoralist and manufacturer. He never actually saw New Zealand but his ships visited many of its harbours, and through them he had a great impact on the country's early trade and on the Maoris. He died in 1840. - Name
