Thomas Burdekin arrived at Sydney in 1828 and established a branch of Burdekins and Hawley, ironmongers and general merchants. His brother Benjamin Burdekin and Alfred Hawley were his partners in London until 1840 when Benjamin withdrew and the firm's name became Burdekin and Hawley. Thomas Burdekin married Mary Ann Bossley, daughter of Thomas Bosseley. On Thomas Bossley's death in 1844 he left considerable property to his wife and his four sons, Lloyd Burdekin, Bossley Burdekin, Marshall Burdekin (1837-1886) and Sydney Burdekin (1839-1899).

Marshall Burdekin (1837-1886), barrister and parliamentarian, was educated at W.T. Cape's School at Darlinghurst and the University of Sydney where he graduated Master of Arts (1859). He was admitted to the NSW Bar in 1859 and the Queensland Bar in 1861. Marshall Burdekin was elected a member of the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seats of Liverpool Plains (1863-1864), Williams (1864-1866) and East Sydney (1867-1869). He was Colonial Treasurer for a short time in January 1866. From 1869 onward he lived mostly abroad.

Sydney Burdekin (1839-1899), pastoralist and parliamentarian, was educated at W.T. Cape's School at Darlinghurst and the University of Sydney where he graduated Bachelor of Arts (1859). Sydney Burdekin managed large pastoral in northern NSW and Queensland. He managed the family's real estate interests and was a director of various public companies. Burdekin was elected member of the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seats of Tamworth (1880-1882), East Sydney (1884-1891) and The Hawkesbury (1892-1894). Sydney Burdekin was an alderman on Sydney City Council (1883-1898) and Lord Mayor of Sydney (1890-1891).

Florence Burdekin, daughter of Sydney Burdekin and his wife Catherine, nee Byrne, married Alexander Hay (1865-1941) in 1900.
