Alexander Borthwick (1828-1903) was born in Scotland and arrived in Victoria in 1853. He founded Victoria Varnish Co. Pty Ltd in Melbourne and was a pioneer of the paintmaking industry in Australia. In 1881 his son and namesake, Alexander (1856-1922), came to Sydney and established a varnish works in Alexandria. A new factory of Borthwick's Pty Ltd was built at Waterloo in the early 1920s. - Name
