  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Dorothy Fry was born in Sydney in 1891 the first child of Arthur and Carrie Fry. She studied art (ca.1910-1912) and worked for a time as a commercial artist drawing newspaper advertisements, and cartoons and illustrations for The Bulletin, The Sydney Mail and Lone Hand. After further study she started to work as a typist/stenographer; in 1919 she took up a position in Batavia [Jakarta, Indonesia] in the office of a British firm. After returning to Australia in 1923, she worked for various organisations in the private and public sectors before retiring in 1953. Dorothy Fry died in Sydney in 1965.

    1902 - 1953; Miscellaneous papers, including : references (1915-1953); passport (1919); list of positions held and duties performed (1926-1948); 'The Australian Girl in Java' newspaper article published in two parts, September 1921; notes and newscuttings re her brother Rollo Fry.
