Douglas Stewart (1913-1985) was born in New Zealand. He came to Sydney in 1938 as assistant editor of the Bulletin. Two years later he was appointed Literary Editor. In 1963 he joined Angus & Robertson as Literary Advisor. He was an accomplished writer producing numerous books of poetry (Green Lions, 1936, Sun Orchids, 1952, The Birdsville track, 1955 etc.), as well as verse plays (Fire on the Snow, 1941, Ned Kelly, 1944 etc.) and literary criticism. His Collected Poems appeared in 1967 and a book of memoirs, Springtime in Taranaki, in 1983. He received an O.B.E. in 1960 and the Order of Australia in 1979 for services to literature. - Scope and ContentSixteen original mss. poems, fifteen in typescript and one handwritten (some with corrections), which appeared in Stewart's book Sun Orchids and Other Poems (1952) together with a letter from Roland Robinson dated 18 Jan. 1951 on the subject of orchids. A first edition of the book is also included. The whole is bound into a single volume inscribed by Stewart to Harry Chaplin in 1953. ;
