    William Stevens was born on 17 June 1825 at Eastbourne, Sussex, England. His family emigrated to NSW in 1840, arriving in Sydney in January 1841. They spent the first ten months on a sheep station which was part of the Glendon Estate, in the Hunter River Region. After moving to Newcastle for a short time, the family was pursuaded by Captain John Howell, William's half-brother, to move to New Zealand. They landed at the Bluff in 1843. William resided in Southland for the next 54 years. He worked in the whaling industry with his half-brother. In 1847, he married his first wife, by whom he had 8 children. In 1862, he married again, having 12 children. William died on 2 Aug. 1897 at the age of 72, at his property at Gummies Bush, Riverton, New Zealand.

    28 June 1897; William Stevens' memoirs, written at Gummies Bush one month before his death, describe the voyage from England to Australia and the hardships which the family encountered in New South Wales before moving to New Zealand. Photocopy of original 12 leaves (24 pages).
