    Harold Betteridge was a well-known figure in West Australian musical circles in the early 20th century. He was foundation conductor of the Perth Symphony Orchestra and Perth Concert Band, and was also held in high regard as a composer, having studied with Dr [Joseph] Summers. He wrote many orchestral pieces, string quartets and songs. In 1915, Betteridge toured America with the Young Australia League Band and in San Diego he was hailed as "The Australian Sousa". He spent his final years in Melbourne and died in 1945. [Information taken from the Australian Musical News and Digest, vol.35, May 1945, p.9.]
