Lou d'Alpuget (1915-2006) sailing journalist, author and commentator on boating matters, and was a serious critic of the Leach Inquiry. Descended from a family of French naval officers, his career began when an article he submitted whilst studying chemical engineering in during the Depression years of 1935 on yachthing was accepted by the Sunday Sun newspaper and in 1936, he was a Daily Telegraph reporter. In 1941, during World War II he joined the army and was transferred to the navy where he was made a skipper of an anti-submarine boat, the Topsy, which patrolled the Pacific. In 1945, he reported on the first Sydney-Hobart yacht race on the front page of the Daily Telegraph. He also covered the races of Australia’s First America’s Cup challenge in Gretel in 1962. During 1960s he wrote for the Sun covering history, science and politics and launched a campaign the clean up Sydney Harbour and launched Australia’s first campaign for safe boating. He won six Australian Medical Association national awards for medical stories. He has also written sailing books including ‘Let’s Go Sailing’ (1950s) and a complete history ‘Yachting in Australia’ (1980)
