Peter Garrett (1953-) singer, environmentalist and political activist. Graduated with Bachelor of Arts from Australian National University (ANU) in 1973 and a Bachelor of Law degree from University of New South Wales 1977. Outsopken critic of government’s nuclear policies and in 1984 stood as a Senate candiate for Nuclear Disarmament Party. He was active in setting up the Australian Privacy Foundation, the body responsible for conducting sucessful campaign against the introduction of the ID card in Australia. In 1993 he was a member of the governing board of Greenpeace International.

Former lead-singer of Australian band Midnight Oil 1977-2002, with a thirteen-album career culminating in the ARIA lifetime achievement award in 2006. The ‘Oils’ were renowned for their fierce independent stance and active support of a range of contemporary concerns including the plight of homeless youth, indigenous people's rights and protection of the environment. The bands protest and benefit shows, notably the anti-Exxon performance on a truck-top in the streets of New York and, of course, the 'sorry suits' performance at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games closing ceremony were hallmarks of a thirteen-album career culminating in the ARIA lifetime achievement award in 2006.

Advocate and campaigner on a range of contemporary Australian and global issues, he was president of Australia’s peak environmental lobby group, the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF), serving two terms 1989-93 and 1999-2004. He was actively involved in campaigns for the protection of both Jervis Bay and Shoalwater Bay, as well as being founding member of the Surfrider Foundation. In his second term, the ACF grew strongly, developed partnerships with non-government organisations and business, and expanded its campaigning into marine conservation and northern Australia.

Narrator and writer of ‘Shoalwater Bay – Up for Grabs’ documentary on threats to remaining biodiversity wilderness in Australia directed by David Bradbury 1992. Lead to Commonwealth inquiry into future land use in Shoalwater Bay Training Area in Queensland
