  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Harold William Rogers (1922-1988), Anglican clergyman, was born in Campsie, NSW. During the Second World War he served in the Citizens’ Miltary Force in Darwin and later in the AIF as a medical orderly in Papua New Guinea. He was ordained a priest in 1949 and served as curate at St Thomas’, North Sydney, until 1951. He was appointed by the Australian Board of Missions as priest-in-charge at Mukawa, Milne Bay District, Papua New Guinea, 1951-1953. He returned to Sydney where he served at St James’, King Street, 1954-1956, and was befriended by Alice Beatrice Knox (1898-1974) who became his chief benefactor. Rogers renewed his missionary activities when he was appointed parish priest of Miri, Sarawak, Diocese of Borneo, 1956-1960. He was State Secretary of the Australian Board of Missions, 1962-1966, and served as rector of Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea, 1966-1970. He then settled in Victoria, where he served at St Peter and St Andrew, Braybrook, 1970-1976, and St Paul’s, Chiltern, 1976-1986. He retired to Wangaratta where he died on 22 March 1988
