Ruth Cristobel Aroha Brown nee Carver (1899-1981) married George Herbert Brown (1898-1971) in the late 1920s after completing nursing studies. Their sons are Roger Frederick Challis, born 1931, Richard Julian Challis, born 1936 (known as Julian), and Michael Gordon Challis, born 1938 (known as Mike). The elder two are scientists, the younger an artist.
