  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The Trocadero Ballroom opened on 3 April 1936, on the western side of George Street, south of Bathurst Street. It was designed by the architects Robertson and Marks, in the Art Deco style, and operated as a site of dances, charity functions, debutante balls, receptions, gala parties, radio broadcasts and pageants until 1970. It was closed on 5 February 1971 and demolished to make way for the new Hoyts Theatre complex.

    The St James Theatre, opened in 1926 in Elizabeth St Sydney, between Market and King Streets. Henry Eli White was the architect. It was owned by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).
