Luigi Strano (1913-2009), Australia's foremost Italo-Australian poet, was born in Reggio Calabria, Italy, and emigrated to Australia in 1930. Prior to World War II he was involved in farming projects in western Sydney, and also began teaching Italian for the Dante Alighieri Society and Berlitz School. From 1940 he also worked as an official court interpreter and translator. He never married and lived at St Johns Park, near Fairfield. He bought a property at Mount Wilson in 1971, where he lived with his sister, Elvira. Largely self-taught, Strano drew much of his inspiration from Dante and the Classical Latin poets. He maintained a regular correspondence with the Italian Latin and Dante scholars, fellow Calabrian Giuseppe Morabito and Professor Giovanni Giraldi at the University of Milan. In 1985 Strano was founding president of the Italo-Australian Writers' Association and also received an Honorary Master of Arts degree from the University of Wollongong for his contributions to Australia's literary culture.
