  • General note

Lafayette Ltd. was a large portrait studio in New Bond Street, London, specialising in photography. The studio's distinguished patronage included royalty, prominent people in society and the arts, as well as a stream of foreign visitors, from Japanese diplomats to African princes. During the early 1900s they expanded into painted portraiture, adding a 'Painting Studio' to their premises. According to an advertisement of the time, they 'secured the services of eminent Artists in Oil, Pastel, and Miniature' who painted direct from life. (Reference: History of the Lafayette Photographic Studio, compiled by the Victoria & Albert Musuem)
This portrait was painted while Mabel and Charles were living in London between 1903-1906 during Jessie's schooling at Wycombe Abbey, Buckinghamshire.
