Charles Alfred Gordon Lillingston was born in Southwold, England in 1857. He married Mabel Harriet Ogilvie, born at Yulgilbar on the Clarence River, NSW on 16 May 1866. Their daughter, Jessie Mary Grey Lillingston married Kenneth Whistler Street. The portrait of Mabel Lillingston passed to their son Roger, whose family presented it to the Mitchell Library. Attributed to Lafayette Ltd. by comparison with related portrait of Mabel Lillingston, signed 'Lafayette 1905' (ML 1171). This portrait was probably painted while Mabel and Charles were living in London between 1903-1906 during Jessie's schooling at Wycombe Abbey, Buckinghamshire. Lafayette Ltd. was a large portrait studio in New Bond Street, London, specialising in photography. They also produced painted portraits.
