William Cooke (1833-1893) arrived in New South Wales on the ship Duke of Wellington in 1852 and travelled to Stroud after spending a short time in Sydney. Here he worked for the Australian Agricultural Company. He visited the Port Stephens area and also worked in Newcastle for six months. In his journal he describes what he sees and does, as well as his relations with people he meets, including the indigenous population - General note
