Sir James Martin, 1820-1886 was a journalist, politician and finally Chief Justice of New South Wales. He was born in Ireland and arrived in Sydney as a 17 months old infant. He was educated in the colony. In 1838, at the age of eighteen, he published in Sydney a book of essays, The Australian Sketch Book, the first book of essays to be published in Australia.
  • Scope and Content
This manuscript appears to be the copy given by Martin to the compositor. It is probably the only draft and includes numerous corrections and additions, all of which were incorporated in the published version.
