John Barre Johnston was born in Ireland in 1849. He married Sarah Macbeth in 1873, before arriving in Sydney in 1880 and starting an import and export business. A member of the Sydney Chamber of Commerce, he was president from 1901-1902. He pioneered tinned meat export and formed Java Cold Storage Co, before retiring in 1925. He was also a member of the Anglican Synod of the Diocese of Sydney, and for 30 years was one of the lay members of the standing committee. He was also on the committee of the St. John Ambulance Association. He was the first president of the Mosman Musical Society. Mrs Johnston died in September 1928. John Barre Johnston died in Sydney in 1930. They were survived by one daughter, Mabel, who had married Percival Francis Frey Barker in 1919.
