James Gidley flew to Sydney from England in 1950, and then travelled by ship to Vanuatu, where he brother had a coconut plantation. After a year's work, Gidley returned to Sydney and took a series of jobs, often on the land, but sometimes in the cities of Sydney, Adelaide, and Melbourne. When in Sydney, Gidley sometimes spoke in the Domain on Sundays. He writes about meeting Harry Hooton, Rosaleen Norton and Gavin Greenlees. He lived on Norfolk Island for six weeks and then New Zealand and Fiji. In 1961 he was part of a crew which sailed from New Zealand to Tahiti. Gidley was employed there as an extra on a film of the Mutiny on the Bounty story, featuring Marlon Brando and Trevor Howard. James Gidley is a published poet - Subject
