  Douglas B. Snelling (1916-85) was a widely respected designer, graphic artist and registered architect who operated in Sydney from 1940 to 1977. He designed a nationally renowned range of chairs called the Snelling Line (said to be the first Australian-designed chairs of modernist style), many adventurous entertainment and retail interiors, substantial houses in the eastern suburbs, north shore, south coast and Noumea, two apartment buildings of the early 1960s, several major modernist refurbishments of office buildings, and late-career master plans for tourist resorts in Vanuatu and Fiji. Born in Kent, England, he arrived in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1924 (aged eight, with his parents), worked in Los Angeles for the first time in 1937-38 and for the second time in 1947-48, retired to Hawaii in 1977 and travelled widely until his death in Sydney in 1985. From the late 1930s to the early 1970s, he was New Zealand's most accomplished expatriate architect and designer and a significant pan-Pacific interpreter of California modern design and architecture innovations. Married three times, to Nancy Springhall (1945-56), Patricia Gale (1962-1976) and Marianne Sparre (1980-1985). (Notes updated by his biographer, Davina Jackson, 2013).
