  After his return from New South Wales in 1800 George Bass joined trader Charles Bishop in a venture to sell much needed goods in Port Jackson. They formed a syndicate to purchase the Brig Venus, fill her with cargo and sail her to Sydney. Among those who subscribed to purchase the Venus were Thomas Jamison, William Kent, James Williamson, Robert Berry, William Waterhouse, Sarah Bass and Elizabeth Bass.

  1. Printed prospectus offering for sale 'The Good Brig Venus' on 18 Sept 1800.
  2. Articles of agreement between George Bass and Charles Bishop, signed by both parties, as part owners of the Brig Venus of London, 8 January 1801.
  3. Certificate of insurance issued to George Bass for the voyage of Venus from the Cape of Good Hope to Botany Bay, 3 July 1801.
  4. Document addressed to Capt Waterhouse from Portsmouth, 24 July 1801, certifying that the Venus kept company with HMS Hussar on its outward voyage until 21 or 22 Jan [1801].
  5. Memorandum containing a list of the crew of the Venus, Spithead, 2 Jan 1801, a list of proprietors of Venus and amounts subscribed, and a list of debts due to tradesmen, the latter two lists in the hand of William Waterhouse.
