    Arthur Murphy was born in Balwyn, Victoria in 1917. He was self-educated having left school very young. A victim of the Depression, he worked at many jobs and also studied at night to gain his formal education. He graduated as a teacher in 1943, taught in high schools and was a principal for fourteen years. He published verse in various literary journals and was literary critic for 'Southerly' for many years. He died in 1990.
