Dr Richard Hawley arrived in Australia from England on the "Thames" in 1862 and died in 1896 aged 72. He was employed as the Librarian & Assistant Secretary of the Australian Library and Literary Institution on 31 Dec 1865. In 1869 the Library became the Free Public Library, Bent St., Sydney. Dr. Hawley became the Coadjutor to the Librarian until 1877, then Assistant Librarian and Compiler until his retirement on 31 Dec 1890.
