  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    James Milson (1783-1872) came to Australia in 1806 and became a successful farmer. His eldest son James Milson (1814-1903) was a partner in the firm of Robert Campbell junior and became known as one of Sydney's most succesful businessmen. In 1846 he began his own mercantile business and in the 1850s embarked on pastoral ventures in New England. He was one of the founders of the Milson's Point Ferry Co. which operated until 1878, when it was sold and became the North Shore Ferry Co. He was also a director of a number of organisations including the Bank of New South Wales, the Colonial Sugar Refining Co., the Australian Gaslight Co., the Sydney Sailors' Home and the Benevolent Asylum He was the owner of Elamang and Cremorne estates and acted as executor for his friend, William Charles Wentworth. In the 1870s, with other members of the Milson family, he took up pastoral holdings in Queensland in partnership with Oscar de Satgé.
