Edward Bellamy arrived in New South Wales in the 1830s and established a medical practice in Goulburn. His relative, Caroline Gerard, settled with her husband, also Edward, in the Illawarra region. They moved to Goulburn in 1845 to be near Edward Bellamy. Edward Bellamy and Caroline Gerard wrote regularly to their relatives Elizabeth and Francis Bellamy in Somerset, England.

The letters contain family news, descriptions of the Illawarra region and Goulburn, medical work in Goulburn and reports of the economic decline in 1842. Other relatives who remained in England also corresponded with Elizabeth and Francis Bellamy in Somerset, and with her sisters Mary and Susan ;
