John Alfred (1927-1969) was a rail and tramway enthusiast, a Vice-President of the Australian Electric Traction Society and member of other related associations. He carried out extensive research into Victorian tramway history, conducted historical tram tours around Melbourne during the 1960s and accumulated a large highly-regarded photographic collection, including over 20,000 colour slides. His book ‘Across the Bridge’, published in 1960, relates the history of North Sydney’s tramways. Alfred died at the age of 42 in a car accident while travelling in Queensland.
