Kellys Bush was 8 hectares of bushland kept as a buffer zone by T.H. Kelly's Sydney Smelting Company. When the smelting works closed in 1967, the developer A.V. Jennings proposed extensive residential development for the site. A group of women, known as the Battlers for Kellys Bush, successfully campaigned for the land to be made a permanent public reserve -- Reference: Hunter's Hill, Australia's oldest garden suburb / Beverley Sherry, photographs by Douglass Baglin.
