Robert Gilfillan, 1823-1909, merchant and auditor, was born in Scotland, son of James Gilfillan and his wife Charlotte, nee Anderson. Robert Gilfillan arrived in Auckland in 1848 and established himself as a merchant and commission agent. He first travelled to Sydney in 1852 in order to sell goods. In 1853 he travelled to London where he married Margaret, nee Fraser, in 1854.
