  • General note

This sword was presented to the Library by a descendant of Gregory Blaxland. The donor's father, Arthur John Trevellyn Hays (known as Jack), had custody of the sword, and always referred to it as the Blaxland sword. It passed to him through his grand-mother, Jane Hays (nee Blaxland), who was a daughter of Gregory Blaxland and who lived with Jack Hays parent's property after she was widowed.

The surveyor's compass, presented to the Library in 1997, came from the same family line, but was held by the donor's uncle, Norman Hays

The sword does appear to date from the late eighteenth - early nineteenth century.
In it's original state, the engravings on the sword would have been embellished in gold wire inlay.
