  • General note

Martens' Account book (Dixson Library ref. ZDL MS 142) lists on 4 Nov. 1835 'View of Edinglassie Judge Forbes 6.6.0'.

In the early 1830s, the first Chief Justice of New South Wales, Sir Francis Forbes, owned the only estate west of the Nepean River, at Emu Plains. Edinglassie (or Edenglassie) was at the southern end of the Plains, upstream from the prison farm. Forbes used the property as a country retreat rather than a working farm. His almost circular-shaped house was built between the River and Cox's Road, just before the ascent to the Mountains. It was demolished in 1900. Martens visited Emu Plains on the way to the Blue Mountains during his first weeks in New South Wales in May 1835. His second trip to the district was in Oct. 1835, when he obtained commissions from James and George Macleay of Brownlow Hill, Sir John Jamison of Regentville and this one from Sir Francis Forbes. "View of Edinglassie" seems to be his only painting for Forbes, who left Sydney for England in April 1836 and retired in July 1837. He returned to Sydney and died at Newtown in 1841.
