  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    From 1825 to 1828, Edward Dumaresq held the office of Surveyor-General and was replaced by George Frankland.
    William Henry Hamilton, public servant and banker, was assigned by Lieut-Governor Arthur to undertake an administrative reorganisation of the office in 1824, and was Acting Colonial Secretary for eight months in 1826.
    James Hobbs, explorer, successfully circumnavigated the coastline of Tasmania in 1824, being instructed by Lieut-Governor Sorell to locate land suitable for settlement. In 1825, Hobbs was appointed Wharfinger and the following year accompanied Thomas Scott and Roberts on an expedition to report on the transport of coal from South Cape to Adventure Bay.

  • General note

    The volume consists of correspondence, printed material, drawings, and maps on various types and sized paper.
    Small notebooks (Nos. 12-14) of similar size and paper have been added into the volume. As the covers of these notebooks have not survived, it is difficult to ascertain whether they were originally one volume. Some of the sketches within these notebooks are executed over two double pages.
    Watermarks are evident on various pages including; "Brocklesby & ...", "...th & Allnutt", "Kingsford / 1822", and "Veritt / 1824" as well as pages that bear the dates 1808, 1821, 1822, 1823
    "D.S. Mitchell" signature on inside front cover.
