  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Sir Charles Moses (1900-1988), broadcaster and administrator, was born in Lancashire, England, and migrated to Australia in 1922. He was General Manager of the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) from 1935-1965, and then took up an invitation to be the first Secretary-General of the Asian Broadcasting Union (ABU), later the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union.

Moses' first direct contact with the proposed ABU had been as an observer at the Fourth Asian Broadcasters' Conference in Kuala Lumpur in August 1962. He actively contributed to the drafting of its resolutions and, later, the ABU statutes, in Tokyo in December 1962.

Moses headed the ABC delegation at the Fifth Asian Broadcasters' Conference in Seoul in 1963. He chaired the First ABU General Assembly, held in Sydney in November 1964. He officially retired as Secretary-General on 28 February 1977, and continued his association with the ABU as an Honorary Councillor.

Moses was appointed CBE in 1954 and knighted in 1961.

Betty Cook joined the ABC in 1939 and went on to become Executive Liaison Officer and personal assistant to Moses. She later joined him at the ABU serving as Assistant to the Secretary-General in the Sydney Office. Her duties included organising ABU meetings and acting as Conference Secretary, as well as Secretary of the ABU Sports Working Party.
