  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Otto Weiss, born in Vienna in 1898, professional engineer, manager of the welding division of Elin A. G. Austria. Weiss visited Australia in 1935 and in cooperation with Charles M. Terry Pty Ltd, Sydney, visited the main industrial users in Australia and New Zealand, and established Elin arc welding equipment. Otto Weiss immigrated to Sydney with his family in 1938 and became the Elin resident engineer with Charles M. Terry, travelling extensively advising and selling Elin generators to industry and Government. During the World War II, Weiss developed the Australian manufacture of a crossfield generator at Jones & Rickard Pty Ltd, Redern, for the Australian armed services and essential industry. He subsequently designed a variety of AC and DC generators built by J & R Oliver Electric and other local manufacturers. Otto Weiss was a corporate member of The Institution of Engineers, Australia, and maintained a wide professional correspondence. He was a significant contributor to the development of the electrical engineering industry in Australia. Otto Weiss died in 1946 and was survived by his wife Elisabeth (who died in 1987) and his son Ernest, also a chartered electrical engineer and a senior executive of GEC Australia Limited.

  • Scope and Content
    Otto Weiss papers, 1934-1946, mostly in German, including personal correspondence related to his immigration and experience as an enemy alien in Australia during World War II. The bulk of the collection is professional correspondence and technical material related to the engineering, design and manufacture of welding generators and equipment including technical drawings, detailed machine designs, design and costing documents, design calculation and test results.
