  • Scope and Content
18 Oct. 1802; Letter to Miss A. Franklin of Spilsby, Lincolnshire, addressed as 'Dear Sister', written whilst on board the Investigator on the northwest coast of New Holland. Franklin provides a physical description of Port Jackson (Sydney and the Harbour), the social composition of the settlement, produce and the possibilities of the wool trade, observations and interactions with the indigenous population, wildlife, meeting with the French discovery ships, differences in coastline from Cook's journey, and family matters.
15 Aug. [1803]; Letter to Mrs Wm. Franklin, No.2 Alms Court, Temple, London, addressed 'Dear Mother'. Franklin describes the poor condition of the Investigator and the wreck of the the Porpoise. In Dec 1802, the Investigator was found to be rotten and left at Port Jackson. Governor King fitted out the Porpoise with Lieut. William Fowler as captain. On 17th August, the Porpoise was wrecked on a reef seven hundred miles north of Port Jackson, with the crew stranded on a sandbank. Flinders went to Sydney in a cutter for assistance and secured the ship, Rolla. The Rolla then proceeded to China.
