  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Rocks is an area to the west of Circular Quay in Sydney. Since the earliest days of Sydney settlement it has been a mainly residential area, bounded by Sydney Harbour and including wharves, docks, bond stores and warehouses. In 1902 many of the residences in the area were demolished in an attempt to rid the area of bubonic plague. Residences were rebuilt but by 1932 a number of buildings were again demolished to accomodate the approaches to the Sydney Harbour Bridge which opened in that year. In the early 1970s the Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority, which administers the Rocks area, proposed extensive new residential developments in the area. Residents became concerned at the level of proposed development and formed resident groups, such as the Rocks Residents' Action Group. The trade union movement, and in particular Jack Mundey of the Builders' Labourers' Federation, became involved in the protests and imposed green bans on building sites in the area. As a result of the action taken by resident groups and unions redevelopment of the area was limited.
