James Samuel Hassall (1823-1904), Anglican clergyman, was born in Parramatta, eldest son of Thomas and Ann Hassall. James S. Hassall studied for the ministry, firstly under Rev. Robert Allwood at St James Church, Sydney, and later at 'Lyndhurst', Glebe. In 1848 he was ordained by Bishop William Grant Broughton. In 1850 James S. Hassall married Frances Dixon with whom he had eight children. James S. Hassall was first appointed to St Peter's Church, Cooks River, NSW and later to Bungonia, NSW. Early in the 1850s he was appointed to the parish of Berrima, NSW, where he remained until 1873, when he and his family moved to Queensland. James S. Hassall lived firstly at Ipswich and then Oxley before being appointed to the parish of Sherwood in Brisbane. He remained at Sherwood until his retirement in 1899. While at Sherwood, the Hassall family lived at 'Matavai' at Corinda, named after the bay in Tahiti where Rowland and Elizabeth Hassall, and their children, Thomas and Samuel had first landed in 1797. In 1902 James S. Hassall published his reminiscences 'In old Australia: records and reminiscences from 1794'. He died in 1904 and is buried in Sherwood Cemetery, along with his wife Frances who died in 1907. - Scope and ContentAppointment diary of James S. Hassall, being one small 'Letts's' diary (1881) with daily manuscript entries recording appointments and visits by James S. Hassall, between January and August 1881. Entries are brief and include details of family visits and family letters received, parishioners visited, baptisms, deaths in the parish, and details of the Church in which he preached each Sunday.
