    Images of the 'Norsel' and the Norwegian-British-Swedish Expedition to Queen Maud Land in the Antarctic, 1949-1952.

    1867. With some of the huskies, needed to draw the 'weasels' over frozen wastes, transported from the Expedition's sister ship 'Thorshvodi', the 'Norsel' sights the first small icebergs
    1868. Huskies sleep on the deck of the 'Norsel' as she nears the ice cliffs of Queen Maud Land
    1869. The 'Norsel' nears the ice cliffs which rise from the frozen Antarctic waters
    1870. Break-up of the pack ice
    1871. The 'Norsel' is trapped fast between the immovable Antarctic pack ice and must wait until pressure eases
    1872. Having found a suitable place to land the wintering party, the unloading of the 'Norsel' commences with the snow tractors, or 'weasels'
    1873. Having unloaded stores from the 'Norsel', the party now commence a shuttle service by snow tractors, or 'Weasels' to a point two miles inland where the party intend to set up a base camp
    1874. The setting up of a base camp proved gruelling work for man and beast
    1875. The erection of the pre-fabricated buildings at the base camp goes on. In the foreground one of the aircraft awaits a hangar, while the other is coming in from a reconnaissance flight

    'N.S.W. Education Department Visual Education Centre Library' stamped on reverse. 'Department of External Affairs Antarctic Division ANARE photo' stamped on reverse of most images. 'This C.O.I. film is a Crown Film Unit production, for the Foreign Office and was made in co-operation with the British Royal Geographic Society and the Scott Polar Research Institute of Cambridge University. It is the first truly international expedition to the Antarctic, with three nations sending men and means - and sharing the cost' stamped on reverse. Cardboard typed caption affixed to photo at PXE 731/1866.
