  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Rachel Henning and her sister Amy came to Australia in 1854 to join their siblings Biddulph and Annie who had arrived the previous year. Rachel went back to England in 1856, but returned in 1861 to join Annie and Biddulph at Marlborough station, Biddulph's property near Rockhampton, Queensland. The following year they moved to Exmoor station near Port Denison (now Bowen). In 1866 Rachel married Deighton Taylor. They lived for a time near Bulahdelah, before moving to a farm at Springfield near Figtree in the Illawarra. In 1896 they joined Annie and her husband George Hedgeland at Ryde in Sydney. Rachel Henning died at Hunters Hill in 1914.
  • Scope and Content
    Transcriptions of two diaries written by Rachel Henning: from England to Australia on board the Calcutta, 16 Sept to 22 Oct 1854, and from Liverpool to Sydney on board the Great Britain, Feb to 10 May 1861. On the 1854 voyage Rachel Henning was accompanied by her sister Amy and cousin Tregenna Biddulph. This is the second of two diaries written on the 1854 voyage; the first, covering the early part of the voyage, has been lost. A photocopy of a cabin and seating plan for the Great Britain which was annotated by Rachel Henning is included. The Library does not hold the original diaries;
