  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

In 1854 Augustus Charles Gregory, later surveyor-general of Queensland, was appointed leader of a scientific expedition to explore the north of Australia. The party of 18 men left Moreton Bay in August 1855 and reached the Victoria River in September. They explored the Victoria, Elsey, Roper and Macarthur Rivers and discovered and named the Leichhardt River. They returned to Brisbane by way of the Flinders, Burdekin, Fitzroy and Burnett Rivers. -- Source: Australian Dictionary of Biography, vol. 4
