  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Born William Tobin, in Melbourne in 1949, Zoates studied and trained in art, dance, choreography, yoga and psychiatric nursing amongst other things, mostly under private tutors after leaving school. He became known as a cartoonist and film maker. Most of his work is anti-authoritarian in tone and champions the causes of Sydney's dispossessed underclasses such as unemployed youth, squatters, the homeless, drug addicts and also people alienated by the mainstream culture such as anti-establishment artists and homosexuals. -- Information from papers, MLMSS 7135
