Stuart Campbell was a distinguished Australian aviator. As chief pilot of two expeditions to Antarctica led by Douglas Mawson, 1929-31, he became one of the first men to fly in Antarctica. He followed this with important aerial survey work in Papua New Guinea. During World War 2 he served in the RAAF rising to the rank of Group captain. In 1947 he led the inaugural ANARE (Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition) to Antarctica establishing stations on Heard and Macquarie Islands. During the 1950s, 60s and 70s he ran his own importing company in Thailand. He spent his last years in retirement in Townsville.
