  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Anthony Hordern (1918-2001) was the son of Anthony (Tony) Hordern (1889-1970) and the grandson of Sam Hordern (1849-1909), co-proprietor of the retail store Anthony Hordern & Sons. He was schooled in England and The Kings School, Parramatta, and then enlisted in the army while studying at Cambridge in 1938. After marrying Betty McCoy in 1941, he was stricken with a viral infection which left him paralysed. He spent the rest of his life confined to a wheelchair.
The Hordern family's involvement in stockbreeding and the Royal Agricultural Society have been longstanding, with their Retford Park and Milton Park properties. In 1952 Anthony Hordern purchased Round Hill, near Culcairn, where he and his wife established the prize-winning Round Hill Beef Shorthorn Stud and the Underhill Southdown Sheep Stud. His contribution to primary industry was significant and continued up until his death in 2001.
Anthony Hordern's obituary was published in the Sydney Morning Herald, 28 November 2001, p.35.
